A lifelong candle fan, I poured my first candles when I was about 13 years old in my parents' basement using paraffin, which was the only wax available at the time. I was immediately hooked! As an adult, I was disappointed with how most commercially-made candles burned poorly and failed to scent my home. So I decided to try my hand at making candles that would scent the room and not leave a huge rind of wasted wax clinging to the jar. Success! When vegetable waxes such as soy were introduced, I just HAD to try those as well! Having conquered the tricky soy candle beast, I wanted to move on to the challenge of making my own soaps so I could control what went into them and how they smelled. The marriage of art and science that is modern soapmaking still fascinates me to this day. In the evenings when it's time to get off my feet and relax, I love to knit, crochet, and sew. All items in my studio are handcrafted by me, AJ, and my peach of a husband, Ron. We make everything right here in our smoke-free, country home in the heart of the U.S. We love what we do and have a passion for fragrance!

Welcome to AJ's Country Cottage! Our modern lives are often so hectic and stress-filled. It's important to carve out a bit of relaxing "down" time for yourself each day. My desire is to help you achieve a tranquil little oasis of your favorite scents with my room-scenting candles and tarts, and to help you pamper yourself with my luxurious artisan bath products. Remember: Life's too short to save candles and soaps! Put them to good use; I'll make plenty more. This husband-wife team wants to make your little corner of the world a sweeter-smelling place!

Returns and exchange details

We package carefully to insure safe arrival, but in shipping glassware, damage does occasionally occur. We insure orders so that the post office will reimburse you for your losses should breakage or loss of package occur.

Due to health and sanitation regulations, we cannot accept returns on soaps or any other bath & body items. Returns on candles are accepted if we mistakenly sent you the wrong item, of course! Hasn't happened yet, but nobody's perfect. :)

If you are not sure if you will like a particular scent, we recommend ordering the fragrance in the small sample-sized tarts so you can sniff before committing to a candle! We cannot possibly guarantee that everyone will love every scent, but customers often find a friend or family member with different tastes so they can re-home a candle scent that isn't a favorite. Or you can return unused product for a refund.

We accept PayPal and Etsy direct checkout. Missouri Residents = 5.975% sales tax.

Shipping

We ship via USPS Priority Mail Insured. We typically ship the same day or the next business day after payment is received. We carefully package and cushion all items to ensure they arrive safely. If you receive an item damaged in shipment, please save everything as proof so a claim can be filed.

We do ship internationally. If you do not see a shipping quote for your country, please go to USPS.com and check on current rates to your country. Shipping glassware overseas tends to be expensive, but flat-rate boxes save money and we use them whenever possible. Choose the Medium Flat Rate Box for orders of up to 6 candles, and the Large Flat-Rate Box for orders of 7-9 candles.

♥ FREQUENTLY ASKED CANDLE QUESTIONS ♥
1. Do your candles contain beeswax? None of my candles do.
2. Do your soy candles contain paraffin wax? No. Just pure vegan wax goodness!
3. Do your paraffin candles contain soy wax? No. If you are allergic to soy, buy with confidence!
4. How much wax is in your 8 oz. square mason jars? Glass manufacturers give jar sizes according to how much WATER VOLUME the jar can hold. Wax is less dense than water, so a container that can hold 8 oz. of water cannot quite hold 8 oz. of wax (by weight). So my 8 oz. square mason jars are poured with a minimum of 8 oz. of wax (by weight) each. Also, most glass manufacturers give size assuming the container is filled to the top; I leave room for a wick. :) I fill the jars as much as I can though! Correct wick size is determined, in part, by width of the jar, so I wick for the largest portion of the jar, not the neck, and don't fill the neck too full.
5. What are the differences between soy candles and paraffin candles? Some of my customers say they prefer the cleaner burn of soy and the fact that they are using a renewable resource. Other customers say they are allergic to soy, or that they prefer the superior scent throw of paraffin so their whole house will be scented. :)
6. Do your candles really smell when burning? OH YES. Check my feedback! The whole reason I got into candlemaking was so I could have candles that would scent my room or home. My candles have superior scent throw, I assure you! If you can't smell them while burning, chances are they are in a "dead zone" with little/no airflow patterns OR your nose has become accustomed to the scent. Try moving the candle to a different location and walking out of the home to take a few deep breaths. These steps should do the trick! Also, please be aware that although we max out the wax in terms of fragrance load, certain scents are by nature very soft. True vanilla and sandalwood, for example, are delicate in nature.
7. Do your candles give off smoke and soot? ANY candle can give off smoke and soot if not made carefully and burned properly. For best results, make sure your candle is not in a draft, and keep the wick trimmed to about 1/4". If you are certain that the candle is NOT in a draft, but the flame is "dancing" and the wick is giving off smoke, it means it's time to trim the wick.
8. Any other candle burning tips? For longest candle life, you should not extinguish until the melted wax pool covers the entire top surface of the candle. On my square mason jars, this typically takes anywhere from 3-4 hours per burn. If you extinguish before the melt pool is complete, the candle may tunnel on subsequent burns. If burned correctly, my square mason jars should burn about 50 hours or MORE.
9. My soy candles have some whitish "frosting" and a slightly uneven, lumpy texture sometimes after they cool down. Is this normal? Yes, it's absolutely normal for soy candles to have this look. It will not affect the quality of burn or scent throw whatsoever. It's actually your guarantee that our candles are pure soy wax and not a blend of other waxes such as paraffin.
10. Can I use your candles on my candle warmer rather than lighting them? Absolutely. Just ignore the wick. ;) When the candle is liquified, it will scent your room / home!

♥ FREQUENTLY ASKED SOAP QUESTIONS ♥
1. Are your soaps vegetarian? Yes, all soaps are made with an all-vegetable recipe, with the exception of Grandma's Old Fashioned Lye Soap.
2. Are your soaps vegan? Most are, but a few varieties do contain milk, silk, and/or honey. These are noted in the descriptions and not labeled as "vegan."
3. How should I care for my handmade soap? Don't leave it in a puddle! Let it dry thoroughly between uses. For long-term storage of handmade soap, put it in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
